Somebody signs the figure. Nobody owns what it means.

Semcore holds the agreed meaning of your business terms above the systems that store your data and beneath everything that reports on it, so the definition behind a number is a thing to look up rather than a thing to reconstruct.

The disagreement is structural, not careless

Two divisions report the same measure and the figures differ. Both are defensible. Each was defined by people who knew their own domain, in a system that had no way of knowing about the other, and the difference only becomes visible once the two numbers are on one page.

Reconciling them is a project, and it is a project you run again the next time somebody edits a definition, because nothing put the edit in front of a reviewer and nothing recorded what the term meant before.

Then there is where the meaning lives. As ingestion, transformation and semantics arrive inside single vendors, the layer that decides what your data means becomes the one you are renting, and it is the one you can least afford to.

What you can do

Two entries in the catalog are written for this, and they answer the two questions a signature rests on: who agreed to this, and where does it live.

  • Make a change to a definition accountable

Every change to a data model is put in front of a reviewer before it lands, the way a change to code already is, and nothing is applied silently.

  • Answer what a term meant before

A change is approved and recorded, so what a term meant, what it means now and who agreed to it are questions with an answer rather than a history to reconstruct.

  • Adopt it without moving your data

The semantic core binds to the data catalog, warehouse and store your estate already keeps its data in, rather than to a copy of it somewhere new.
